What Is a “Menopause Expert”?

September 2, 2026No Comments7 Mins Read

Note: This guide is specific to the United States. Other countries have different professional titles, training pathways, and scopes of practice. Always check local regulations and certifications if you’re outside the U.S.

The menopause transition affects sleep, energy, cognition, mood, relationships, sexual health, bone health, heart health, and more—often at the same time.

No surprise: It can be a disruptive, uncomfortable time of life.

Many women want and need care from a healthcare professional with expertise in menopause (including perimenopause and postmenopause.)

But how do you know if someone is really a menopause expert — or not? This article explains.

What Is a Menopause Expert? The Short Answer

A menopause expert is someone with specialized training in helping women navigate the changes that come with the menopause transition — including perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause.

Menopause can affect every part of a woman’s life: sleep, energy, memory, mood, relationships, weight, libido, and more. As a result, women might seek out one or more menopause experts to help with various aspects of the transition.

The right expert can make all the difference. Some menopause experts are licensed medical professionals who can prescribe treatment and manage your care. Others offer coaching, education, and support to help you make lifestyle changes that ease symptoms and improve your quality of life. (More specifics in the table below.)

Importantly, an expert will be able to provide menopause-specific guidance while adhering to their scope of practice — meaning they will offer care within what they are licensed and qualified to do, but not beyond that.

Why Finding Trusted Healthcare Providers Matters at Menopause

Menopause is a complex, often misunderstood time of life. It’s important to find a trusted, well-informed person to help you make decisions for your health.

Depending on their expertise, a menopause-informed provider may be able to:

  • Figure out what is a menopause symptom and what might be a symptom of a condition that needs treatment (e.g. thyroid disease, anemia, sleep apnea, depression).
  • Give evidence-based options, including FDA-approved menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) and non-hormonal treatments.
  • Monitor safety, interactions, and dose adjustments over time.
  • Coordinate care across disciplines (pelvic health physiotherapist, mental health provider, registered dietician, pharmacy).
  • Help with lifestyle behaviors that can support your health and wellbeing throughout the menopause transition.

The wrong provider—or an unqualified “expert”—can delay care, increase costs, cause worry/confusion, and expose you to ineffective or risky interventions.

That’s why it’s crucial to work with someone who is a genuine expert, who will adhere to their scope of practice and put your needs first.

Types of Menopause Experts — and What They Can Do*

Different types of providers can offer different types of support. Here’s a snapshot of how various experts may help.

Prescribing/diagnosing refers to U.S. scope; state rules vary.

*Note: This chart is specific to the US.

Be Wary of Unregulated Titles That Sound Expert-y

There are a surprising number of unregulated titles that make ‘experts’ sound like they’re medical professionals. For example, ‘doctor’ or ‘physician’ are not regulated titles. The term ‘doctor’ can legitimately apply to many non-medical doctors, such as PhDs, or DCs (doctor of chiropractic), but that’s not the same as a medical doctor. Someone can call themselves a physician without any medical training.

If you’re looking for a medical doctor, ensure they have MD (or in the US, DO) next to their name. If you’re unsure about a practitioner, check they’re in good standing with their regulating body. You can do this by checking docinfo.org, or referring to the state’s medical board. You can also ask the person about their scope of practice, and what they are licensed and qualified to do — and what they aren’t.

Titles and scopes of practice vary across English-speaking countries. For example, a “GP” in the UK or Australia may have a similar role to a Primary Care Physician in the U.S., but their training, prescribing rights, and access to menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) may differ.

In the US, a doctor of osteopathy (DO)  is a regulated term for fully licensed medical professionals with the same prescribing and surgical rights as MDs. They used to be called osteopaths. However, in other countries, such as the UK, Canada, and Australia, osteopaths are not medical doctors and are not the same as DOs in the US.

Always check local regulations and professional credentials.

Who Isn’t a Medical Expert (But Might Say They Are)

Unfortunately, some people call themselves “menopause experts” but lack the medical training or professional oversight to offer safe, evidence-based care.

Common Red Flags:

  • Use of vague or misleading titles like “hormone specialist” or “menopause practitioner” with no medical license.
  • Expensive supplement bundles or proprietary hormone pellets/blends promoted as “the only fix”.
  • Recommending or relying on unproven or nonstandard lab testing methods (e.g., saliva testing for hormones).
  • Promoting fear-based messages like “your hormones are wrecked” or “doctors don’t understand menopause.”
  • Discouraging patients from using MHT or seeing licensed medical professionals. Or, saying “MHT is for everyone,” or “all women can benefit from taking X.” All-or-nothing phrasing is a red flag.

These individuals often operate outside traditional healthcare systems. While some may offer helpful advice or emotional support, they should not be relied on for diagnosis or treatment of medical conditions.

Where to Find Certified Menopause Experts in the U.S.

Looking for a trustworthy provider? These directories list practitioners with specialized training in menopause care:

  • The Menopause Society Practitioner Directory — search for NCMP/MSCP clinicians.
  • Let’s Talk Menopause — curated provider lists and education.
  • My Menopause Doctor — provider search and resources.
  • Pelvic Health: Find a pelvic floor physiotherapist via professional associations/directories.
  • Mental Health: Use reputable therapist directories; filter for midlife/menopause expertise.
  • Nutrition: Find a Registered Dietitian with women’s health/menopause focus.

(If outside the U.S., look for national menopause societies, GP/primary care directories, and local pelvic health PT associations. Prescribing rights and MHT access vary by country.)

Telehealth Options for Menopause Care

With the shortage of menopause-trained providers in many areas, telehealth has become an important access point for specialized care.

What Telehealth Can Provide:

  • Initial consultations and follow-ups
  • MHT prescriptions (including FDA-approved bioidentical hormones)
  • Lab test ordering and interpretation
  • Non-hormonal treatment prescriptions
  • Ongoing symptom management
  • Second opinions on treatment plans

What Telehealth Cannot Provide:

  • In-person procedures and exams (e.g. IUD insertion, biopsies)
  • Emergency care
  • Certain controlled substances
  • Care across state lines (provider must be licensed in your state)

Tip: Verify the platform uses licensed clinicians, supports shared decision-making, and coordinates with your in-person care when needed.

Assembling Your Team of Menopause Experts

Often, women benefit from working with several different practitioners. Start with at least one licensed prescriber to evaluate symptoms, rule out other conditions, and discuss treatment options (including MHT when appropriate). Then round out your support if needed. Options may include a pelvic floor physiotherapist / PT,  Registered Dietician, therapist, sex therapist, sleep specialist, and/or a qualified women’s health coach who collaborates within their scope of practice.

A few guiding principles make the process simpler and safer:

  • Verify credentials, not claims.

Look for regulated titles (MD, DO, NP, PA, PT, RD, PharmD) and relevant certifications (e.g., NCMP/MSCP for licensed clinicians).

  • Choose providers whose scope aligns with your needs.

Medical diagnosis and prescribing require a licensed clinician; coaching supports behavior change and consistency between visits.

Be cautious with unregulated titles, one-size-fits-all supplements or pellets, nonstandard testing pitched as definitive, and fear-based messaging.

It can expand access to menopause-informed care—just make sure providers are licensed in your state, and coordinate with your in-person team.

Track symptoms, prepare questions, ask for options, and seek a second opinion when needed.

Menopause is a major life transition, but you don’t have to navigate it alone—or guess your way through it. With a qualified, collaborative team and a clear plan, you can reduce symptoms, protect long-term health, and feel more like yourself again.

Always check local regulations and professional credentials, trust your experience, and insist on care that respects your goals and preferences. You deserve nothing less.
