Worth Ditching Your Acids For? – Beautiful With Brains

Physical exfoliators have fallen badly out of favour. Acids took over, scrubs got blamed for everything from irritation to damaged skin barriers, and suddenly rubbing anything grainy on your face became skincare heresy. Enter Versed Day Maker Microcrystal Exfoliator, which promises to make face scrubs respectable again with ultra-fine microcrystalline cellulose particles and a creamy, moisturising base.

Bold move. Especially for someone like me who would normally reach for glycolic acid without even looking at the scrub aisle. So, is Versed Day Maker Microcrystal Exfoliator actually gentler and smarter than the old-school scrubs we all learned to fear… or is it just sandpaper with better branding?  Let’s find out.

The Verdict

My rating: 3.5/5

Best for: Anyone who loves physical exfoliation and wants a face scrub with super-fine particles that leaves skin instantly smoother and softer.

Skip it if: You have very sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, or fragrance-reactive skin, or you already have a chemical exfoliant you love and see absolutely no reason to start sanding your face again.

What I like: The microcrystals are ridiculously fine, the creamy base gives them plenty of slip, and my skin feels noticeably smoother and softer as soon as I rinse it off.

What I don’t: The lemongrass oil is completely unnecessary, and at the end of the day, this is still a scrub. Press too hard and those innocent-looking little particles can turn on you.

Bottom line: Versed Day Maker Microcrystal Exfoliator hasn’t convinced me to abandon glycolic acid. But if you love that instant baby-smooth feeling only a physical scrub gives you, this is one of the better ones I’ve tried. The particles are tiny, the formula is creamy, and it gets the job done without making my face feel like it’s just survived a session with sandpaper.

Versed Microcrystal Exfoliator Ingredients: What Does The Science Say?

You know I’m not a face-scrub girl. Give me glycolic acid and leave the tiny sanding particles at the door.  But if you are going to scrub your face, you may as well do it with something that isn’t trying to take the top three layers of skin with it. And, to be fair to Versed, microcrystalline cellulose is a much smarter choice than the chunky, scratchy nonsense that gave physical exfoliation such a bad name in the first place. Here’s why:

Microcrystalline Cellulose: The Tiny Scrubby Bits

Microcrystalline cellulose is made into very small particles that physically buff dead cells off the surface of your skin as you massage the product around in circular motions. The good news? It’s gentler than most physical exfoliants. A 2024 study comparing different natural exfoliating particles found that microcrystalline cellulose exfoliated well and had a softer skin feel thanks to its rounded particle shape.  Translation: if you insist on rubbing something gritty over your face, this is one of the less stupid ways to do it.

But it’s still a scrub. The harder you press, the longer you massage and the more often you use it, the more friction you create. And friction is exactly why I still prefer chemical exfoliants: they loosen dead cells without turning exfoliation into a manual labour job.  So, yes. Versed picked a decent exfoliating particle. Am I giving up my glycolic acid for it? Please.

Sunflower Oil + Jojoba Oil + Glycerin: The Moisture

Versed does at least have the good sense to surround all those scrubby particles with sunflower oil, jojoba oil and glycerin. Sunflower oil can help support the skin barrier and improve hydration while glycerin is one of skincare’s best humectants for keeping skin hydrated . Their job here is much simpler: give the scrub some slip so exfoliating your face feels less like sanding a wall. And they do that job well.

Lemongrass Oil + Citral: And Then They Had To Ruin It

The formula, especially as far as physical exfoliators go, was doing perfectly fine. Then somebody decided it needed  lemongrass oil. Why? It doesn’t exfoliate. It doesn’t hydrate. It doesn’t make the formula work better. It makes it smell nice. Unfortunately, lemongrass oil contains fragrant compounds such as citral, a famous allergen. Does that mean it’ll irritate your face the second you use it? For most skin types, no.  But if your skin already throws a tantrum around fragrance and essential oils, why give it another reason? I’d have left it out.

My Experience With Versed Day Maker Microcrystal Exfoliator

Versed Day Maker Microcrystal Exfoliator is a thick, creamy scrub packed with ridiculously fine little particles. None of the huge, scratchy chunks that make you wonder whether you’re exfoliating your face or refinishing a table. I could definitely feel the grit, though, so this is one to massage over wet skin with a light hand and rinse off thoroughly. Scrubbing harder isn’t going to win you better skin.

It has a light citrusy scent courtesy of lemongrass oil. Pleasant? Sure. Necessary? Not remotely. I’d happily sacrifice the spa moment if it meant removing a potential irritant, especially from a product whose entire job already involves rubbing your skin. The squeeze tube is exactly the sort of packaging a scrub needs: simple, practical and considerably less annoying than digging gritty cream out of a jar.

As for results, this is all about instant gratification. My skin feels noticeably smoother and softer as soon as I rinse it off, and it gives that freshly polished look physical exfoliants are so good at.  Do I prefer it to chemical exfoliation? Not even close. I still reach for glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid because I’d rather remove dead skin buildup chemically than physically rub them off my face. Plus, they have other benefits, like fighting acne or fading away dark spots.

But if I were going to use a scrub, this is the sort I’d choose: superfine microcrystalline particles, a creamy base and none of that aggressive sandpaper nonsense. Versed hasn’t converted me to physical exfoliation. But it has made one of the few face scrubs I don’t immediately want to throw across the bathroom.

Versed Microcrystal Exfoliator

How To Use It

Versed recommends massaging a quarter-sized amount onto wet skin for 60 seconds, 1-2 times a week on the entire face (minus the eye area), then rinsing it off thoroughly. My advice? Don’t treat the 60 seconds as a personal challenge. Use barely any pressure and let those tiny crystals do the work. Scrubbing harder won’t get you smoother skin faster. It’ll just irritate your skin. I’d also use it on a different night from glycolic acid, salicylic acid, retinoids or anything else that already has your skin working overtime. One exfoliant at a time is more than enough.

Who Should Use It, And Who Should Skip It?

  • If you love a proper face scrub and that ridiculously smooth feeling you get the second you rinse it off, Versed Day Maker Microcrystal Exfoliator is one of the better options. The particles are tiny, the base is creamy and it doesn’t feel like you’re attacking your face with gravel.
  • But if you already have a chemical exfoliant you love? You don’t need this as well. I certainly wouldn’t ditch my glycolic acid for it.
  • I’d also skip it if your skin is very reactive, hates essential oils or is currently irritated. The formula contains lemongrass oil and citral, and no amount of “gentle scrub” marketing makes fragrance suddenly brilliant for sensitive skin.
  • And if you have angry, inflamed acne, please don’t scrub the hell out of it. Your spots have suffered enough.

Does Versed Microcrystal Exfoliator Live Up To Its Claims?

CLAIM TRUE?
This gentle exfoliating cleanser refines the appearance of pores while brightening, smoothing, and clarifying skin. It doesn’t have salicylic acid, so it won’t do much for pores. Removing dead skin cells can brighten and smooth skin, but clarifying? That’s a  marketing word that means nothing.
Its creamy, nourishing formula replenishes moisture while it exfoliates so it won’t strip your skin. True, unless you use it too much, too often, or you scrub too hard.
Formulated with superfine microcrystalline, a 100% plant-based, biodegradable alternative to microbeads, and an antioxidant-rich blend of black currant and raspberry leaf extract, which balances oily skin. It’s true it’s formulated with all this stuff. But the antioxidants don’t stay on the skin long enough to do anything. When you rinse this exfoliant down the drain, the antioxidants follow suit.
