If you’re checking out Rodan + Fields products for your acne scars, you probably want to know one thing: does this stuff actually work? Acne marks are stubborn as hell. The pimple disappears, you breathe a sigh of relief… and then the bloody mark hangs around for the next six months like it pays rent. What You’re Actually Fighting When You Have Acne Scars
First things first: that “acne scar” you’re desperately trying to fade may not actually be a scar. A brown mark, a red mark and an actual dent in your skin are three completely different problems. Throwing the same “acne scar serum” at all three and hoping for the best is exactly how you end up six months and £200 poorer with the same damn marks. Here’s what may actually be going on:
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): The Brown Marks

How? By using ingredients that reduce melanin production and/or speed up the removal of pigmented skin cells (i.e. exfoliate skin). Think retinoids, azelaic acid, and certain exfoliating acids (like the alpha hydroxy acid glycolic acid). They can gradually fade these marks. We’re talking weeks or months, not “dark spots visibly disappear in seven days” nonsense.

If your pimple disappears but leaves a flat red, pink or purple mark behind, that’s post-inflammatory erythema (PIE). Which Rodan + Fields Productrs Can Treat Acne Scars?
Let’s get one thing straight: Rodan and Fields does NOT have any skincare products that can treat acne scars of PIE. Let’s start with a brief overview of their lines with respective key ingredients:

I don’t know why everyone says this is the best line for acne scars when it does squat for them. This is their anti-aging line to fight free radicals and minimise the visible signs of aging, not acne skincare. It’s true it has niacinamide, an ingredient that treats specific skin concerns like uneven skin tone and dehydration. But, it can’t single-handedly treat acne scars. Oh, and why other lines are for acne-prone skin, this is for all skin types (if your skin is sensitive, it’s still a good idea to do a patch test first).
- Redefine Pore Minimizing Toner has a little niacinamide to hydrate and help even the skin tone, but there are much better products for this around.
- Redefine Triple Defense Treatment SPF 30 is A daytime moisturizer with broad-spectrum protection. SPF is non-negotiable when treating acne scars/marks because UV exposure will darken hyperpigmentation faster than any serum can fade it. But it’s prevention, not a treatment.
- Redefine Overnight Restorative Cream is rich night cream that deeply moisturises skin. And while it contains a few drops of niacinamide, it really does nothing for acne lesions, acne scars, or acne marks.
Spotless Regimen: Best Skincare Routine For Active Acne, NOT Acne Scars
- Spotless Daily Acne Wash has 5% Benzoyl Peroxide to kill acne bacteria and give you clearer skin. Benzoyl Peroxide works better in a leave-on product though. In a cleanser, it’s just less irritating, so it’s a better option for people with sensitive skin that can’t tolerate it otherwise. Just know it’ll take you longer to see results.
- Spotless Acne Clearing Treatment has 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide to treat acne. No breakouts, no acne scars. So it helps in a roundabout way, but this isn’t the line to fade dark spots.

Rodan And Fields Multi-Acid Enzyme Peel ($90.00): The Best PIH Treatment
The formula throws pretty much every type of exfoliant at your skin: glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, gluconolactone (PHA) and papain. Basically, it’s an exfoliating cocktail that helps get rid of the pigmented dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin so the marks gradually look lighter. Plus, they also smooth out a rough skin texture. The ingredient list also contains niacinamide, which also gives them a helping hand at reducing dark spots.
And this cocktail packs a punch. Skin feels noticeably smoother and softer after using it, and with consistent use, it helps brighten that dull, uneven look and fade leftover dark marks. It’s a leave-on peel, but it doesn’t have that brutal, face-melting feel you might expect from seeing this many acids crammed into one bottle. That said, sensitive skin may still find it too much, especially if you dive straight into using it several nights a week.
What About Rodan + Fields Pure C Serum?
It can help with PIH, but I wouldn’t buy it specifically for that. Pure C Serum contains 10% ascorbic acid (vitamin C), which can interfere with melanin production and gradually brighten uneven skin tone. But 10% is fairly modest when you’re trying to tackle stubborn dark spots, and this formula doesn’t pair vitamin C with other heavy-hitting pigment fighters like kojic acid or azelaic acid.
That doesn’t make it a bad serum. You still get the antioxidant benefits of vitamin C, plus some help with brightness and collagen production. But if fading post-acne dark marks is your priority, the Multi-Acid Enzyme Peel is the stronger option in the Rodan + Fields range. Pure C is more of an all-round vitamin C serum that may give your PIH a helping hand along the way.

You’re a good fit for Rodan and Fields if:
- You’re dealing with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or mild post-inflammatory erythema, not deep textured scars.
- You have normal to oily skin that can tolerate active ingredients without excessive dryness or irritation.
- You’re willing to commit to 8-12 weeks of consistent use before expecting visible results.
You should skip Rodan and Fields if:
- You have deep, pitted atrophic scars and are expecting topical products to erase them completely.
- You’re on a tight budget and can’t justify spending $200-$300 on a skincare regimen when similar ingredients are available at lower price points.
